The Generalitat de Catalunya is a political institution consisting
of the Parliament, the Government and the President of Catalonia, and it has
its own symbol known as the Senyal de la Generalitat (the Generalitat's Symbol).
The Senyal de la Generalitat was introduced and made official in 1981. It was designed in 1932 on the basis of an original drawing by Bartomeu Llongueras and is made up of an oval containing red pales on a yellow or gold field framed by sprigs of laurel leaves.
The Senyal was redesigned as part of the Generalitat's Visual Identification Programme: the sprigs of laurel are symmetrical, making the symbol reversible.
The Senyal is usually reproduced in a single colour – red or black – while the version in three colours is used in very specific instances.
